9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
INTRODUCTION: Sanctification is a spiritual surgery performed by God in the life of a saved soul (Ezekiel 36:26). It is the second work of grace after salvation. Sanctification simply means to make holy, pure and separated unto God (Jeremiah 1:4-5). It is a progressive work of God in man that makes us free from sin and be like Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:23; Romans 8:13). It is vital to understand the process and benefits of sanctification.

1. THE PROCESS
To be sanctified, you need to see yourself as you are; filthy and in need of help, after which you cry to God for deliverance (Isaiah 6:5). Present yourself to the Sanctifier – God (1 Thessalonians 5:23), through the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:2; 2 Thessalonians 2:13), the word of God (John 17:17), the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 9:13-14; 1 John 1:7, 9), and daily surrender (Colossians 3:8-10; Romans 6:13). This process can be a painful experience but the result is that you are broken and transformed into a new nature (Galatians 2:20; 2 Timothy 2:3-4).
The awareness that you do not own yourself anymore helps you prioritise God in everything you do, and whatever does not glorify Him is a no-go area for you (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
2. THE BENEFITS
Sanctification represents a believer’s victory over the flesh (Romans 7:24-25), the world (1 John 5:4), and the devil (James 4:7). A sanctified believer will enjoy the ability to easily resist temptation because there is a renewed hatred for sin and lust. Sanctification fosters intimacy with God, increases spiritual strength and stability (Psalm 15:1-5). It also aids ‘clean record’ for believers, that is, the enemy will not have a foothold over such (John 14:30). It helps believers to be humble and submissive to God and to constituted authorities. The Adamic nature in man is subdued (Romans 8:1-5). It gives the believer control over self (Galatians 2:20; Romans 6:13). It promotes right standing before God and pure intentions of actions and words (Acts 24:16).
CONCLUSION: Sanctification is an integral part of Christian growth; every child of God must earnestly desire it.
