5 Powerful Benefits of Reading the Bible Every Day

Have you never opened the pages of your Bible in order to read some verses and asked yourself, “Did this make any difference?” I know that this thought crossed the minds of many people, like you.

When many believers decide to start daily Bible reading, they do it with enthusiasm. They buy themselves a new Bible reading plan, get more motivated, but reality strikes. They sleep in late, children must be fed, they get work-related emails much quicker than they manage to drink a cup of coffee. As a result, your Bible is left unattended on your bookshelf.

The reason for this is pretty obvious:

The effects of daily Bible reading cannot be observed instantly. Just like when you sow a seed into the ground, you are not going to see a grown-up tree in your backyard the very next day. Nevertheless, changes happen.

They take place quietly. In a hardly noticeable way. Until suddenly, you realize that things have become different. You react differently, pray better, recollect verses at the right moment. You feel like everything has changed. And all thanks to God’s Word.

Every day you spend with God’s Word does not bring immediate transformation. Allow
God to shape your heart, renew your mind, and guide your life one day at a time.

Benefit #1: Reading the Bible Every Day Strengthens Your Relationship with God

Consider having a relationship with a person without communicating at all. Wouldn’t that be impossible? Communication is key to nurturing relationships. This applies to your relationship with God as well.

Prayer is the language you use to converse with God. The scriptures are one of the main modes through which God communicates with you. When you read the scriptures each day, you do not merely collect knowledge but get to know God’s heart.

Most Christians treat scriptures as an instruction manual. It is way more than just that. The gospel of redemption is the theme here. The beginning comes from the book of Genesis and ultimately
ends at Jesus.
Amazingly, you are also part of this incredible story. As it states in Psalm 119:105, God’s Word serves as a lamp to your feet and a light to your way. This verse is not only beautiful poetry but it describes what occurs when you read scripture often.

You begin to see things more clearly. You learn the priorities of God. You learn how to listen to his voice. I have heard someone say that Bible reading is like spiritual Wi-Fi. It may not be an accurate analogy,
but it gets the point across. You do not know you have it when things are working well but suddenly
everything changes when you lose it.

Most Christians experience the same realization when they have not been spending time reading the
Scriptures. Prayer seems more difficult. Discouragement weighs heavily. Your zeal grows cold.

But the act of daily Bible reading restores your connection. Not because God went somewhere. But because you came close to him again.

Benefit #2: Daily Bible Reading Gives You Wisdom and Direction
Choices are part of life’s journey. They can be minor. Or they can affect your future.

Do I accept that job offer? Should I move cities for that opportunity? How do I respond to conflict within my family? What about when I’m faced with uncertainty? While the Bible doesn’t give instructions on which car to buy or whether my living room needs a blue or green couch, it gives something much more valuable.
Wisdom.

In Proverbs 3:5-6, believers are called to trust in the Lord with all their hearts and rely on His wisdom rather than their own understanding. By acknowledging God, He will direct their path. A promise many Christians need to hear.

Face it. We’ve all tried doing it “on our own.” How’s that going? Yep. The world has its opinions and thoughts on everything. The internet has even more. Everybody wants to give you advice. Only the Bible has the truth.

Wisdom and the truth, Which is exactly what you need when everyone else is giving you conflicting information. Repeated exposure to Scripture teaches your mind how to think from the biblical point of view. You start making decisions based on the Word instead of your emotions.

It still won’t be easy. But at least you’ll have guidance through life’s journey.

Benefit #3: Reading the Bible Every Day Builds Stronger Faith

Faith doesn’t develop by chance. As your muscles require training, faith needs nutrition. According to Romans 10:17, faith comes through hearing, specifically hearing God’s Word. Take note of what the verse does not say.

Faith does not come from positive thoughts. Faith does not develop from optimistic hopes. Faith develops from God’s Word. Each time you read the Bible, you are feeding your faith. You see Abraham in faith trusting God when everything seemed hopeless.

You see David overcoming great odds to defeat the giant Goliath. You see Daniel holding fast in his faith in spite of his pagan environment. You see Jesus calm the storm, heal the sick, and defeat even death.

The Bible is not about distant events and long ago people. The stories in Scripture are examples for us to emulate, because God who has done those things is still at work. And when your day comes—and it will—you’ll have solid grounds to stand on.

Not because of perfect circumstances around you. But because of your faith that was nurtured through God’s Word everyday. Many Christians try to go through spiritual battles starving themselves.

But daily Bible reading will change that. It gives you strength through constant reminders of God’s faithfulness for the battles ahead.

Benefit #4: God’s Word Brings Peace and Encouragement

As a Christian, if you have been around for some time, there is one thing you will certainly have found out already. Being a follower of Christ does not mean your problems disappear.

Your bills continue to come in. You get that diagnosis. The relationship still stings. Your fears keep cropping up. Who you walk with changes.

One of the most wonderful gifts of daily Bible reading is that it brings peace and encouragement during tough times, and depression. And notice the word that was used. Not every problem is solved. Just that there is a new perspective on dealing with those problems.

In Philippians 4:6-7, God says that we should never let anything make us worry but pray at all times in God’s presence with thanksgiving. The effect of doing so is having peace that defies explanation. The kind of peace that baffles everybody around you.

The kind of peace that stands strong while the circumstances around it may not. The kind of peace that helps you to know God is still in control when everything around you seems to be falling apart.

Think of David. Not many of the Psalms were penned while reclined in a beach chair and sipping a drink. No, the Psalms were written in caves. The Psalms were written while fighting battles. The Psalms were composed while living in uncertainty and fear.

However, time after time, David found himself returning to one concept—God is faithful.
This explains why the Psalms are among the most beloved of all the Bible’s books. Why?

The Psalms reveal that God has answers to all your questions, fears, frustrations, and even tears. It doesn’t mean you have to hide yourself from everyone. Because God knows everything about you.
When you read the Bible daily, you get to have peace amidst all the voices that simply increase your worries.

And face it. There are plenty of things in this world that can give you cause to worry.

In fact, try looking at the headlines on your phone within five minutes and you’ll realize that you need something more than prayers alone. You need the Word of God.

Benefit #5: Daily Bible Reading Helps You Resist Temptation and Sin

Temptation is never about whether. Temptation is always about when. Every Christian experiences temptation. No one passes the test of battling against sin. It’s not an issue of whether we’ll experience temptation. It’s an issue of being prepared when it hits us. According to Psalm 119:11,

“I have stored up your word within my heart, in order that I may not sin against you.” Notice the order of things here. The Word is first stored up within the heart.

And thus affects one’s behavior. Many Christians concern themselves only with behavioral changes. God concerns Himself with changing hearts. In the time of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, He did not depend on the power of positive thinking. He did not debate with Satan. He did not negotiate. He defended Himself with Scripture.

Satan tempted him three times. The message is clear. One cannot defend oneself by using the scriptures that were never studied. One will not have access to the truth that he or she was unaware of before.

Daily Bible reading prepares one for the battles yet unknown. It helps to renew one’s mindset. It enables one to have more discernment. It reminds one about the standards of God when culture tries to change them. Imagine Scripture to be spiritual armor.

One would hardly enter a battleground wearing flip-flops and armed with a pool noodle. At least, one hopes not. However, there are many Christians who do battle in spiritual warfare without reading God’s Word daily.

Bible reading provides one with the needed wisdom, strength, and perspective during temptation. And when the moment comes, one will appreciate the effort of reading the Bible daily.

Jesus used Scripture to resist temptation three times.
Final Thoughts:The Life-Changing Benefits of Reading the Bible Every Day.
But there are many good points that come with reading the Bible daily and they go way beyond knowledge and comprehension. Your connection with God deepens through His word.

Wisdom is acquired to help you make decisions in life. Bible reading strengthens your faith. It gives you peace in difficult situations. It builds up spiritual maturity so that you can resist temptations.

In actuality, there is no need to have a perfect schedule when reading the Bible. You do not have to waste a lot of time. It isn’t necessary to figure out each and every verse right away. You just have to get started. One book. One reading. One day at a time.

This is because with each opening of the book, you will be creating room for God to form your heart, renew your mind, and direct your path.

And decades down the road, you might even come to realize that simply the act of daily Bible reading transformed you in ways beyond measure.
